Day 3

moth·er | \ ˈmə-t͟hər

1. a woman in relation to her child or children.

1. bring up (a child) with care and affection.
2. give birth to.

We all have one. And in the beginning they are literally our entire world. They shape us and break us depending on what they have to give. I often didn’t feel like a ‘proper’ member of my community because my mother was so unwell, and eventually took her own life. There is a lot of shame and guilt when your Mum leaves you like that. ‘Ask The Stars’ explores the early yearnings for my mother when she was absent, and ‘Trigger’ and ‘Heathen’s Prayer’ unravel the horror of suicide for those of us left behind. I know it’s a heavy topic. But writing and sharing these songs has been hugely healing for me. It’s the first time I have really stood proud of my mother’s story. I welcome your thoughts and feelings in the comments section below.

Perhaps if she had been able to write a song about her pain she would still be here. Love you Mum.

Make sure you check you inbox tomorrow for our final day behind the songs; ‘Day 4 – Nature’.
